June is here and for those of us who live in south Florida, it means that we're in the middle of the hot summer! Perfect swimming-in-the-beach weather. We've begun to spend a lot of our week-ends on Miami Beach and taking long walks on the famous boardwalk after dinner.

And recently on one of these early evening walks, we snapped this tranquil photo of a sailboat gliding by between the Spanish Bayonets and seagrapes.  I couldn't resist.

This is my painting for the month of June and I tried to capture that peacefulness that I felt at the time.  I'm including the inspiration photo so that you can see that I've altered
a couple of things including the bloom on the Spanish Bayonet or Yucca aloifolia from the Agavacea family.  These beautiful white flowers bloom during the spring and now of course, it's too hot for them to bloom. But I coulnd't pass up the opportunity to depict them (with heavy impasto oil paints).

Art Basel 2011

Art Basel is, "The world's premier international art show for Modern and contemporary works, Art Basel features nearly 300 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa. More than 2,500 artists, ranging from the great masters of Modern art to the latest generation of emerging stars, are represented in the show's multiple sections."

Over the week-end, we had the pleasure of going to Art Basel, at Miami Beach Convention Center, which celebrated its 10 year anniversary. I'd like to share some images which I found intriguing.

"Joshua" was interesting to me only because someone close to me knows him, and told me to be on the look-out for it.  Funny thing is that he's not Jewish and his real name is not "Joshua"! Artistic license, for sure!

Back in June, I started doing a weekly artist profile post. Read about it here. It's been very enjoyable looking for different people to profile but time consuming. I've learned a lot by simply seeing different artists, their styles and approaches to subject matters. It's been very interesting to read their bios, philosophies and see what they create.  I've "met" some lovely people like Annie Maxwell, Jonathan Aller, and Mark Webster who appreciated my "shout out" to them and I've been enriched by the experience.

This was a commitment I made to myself, that I would do this once a week but now I find that I am stealing time from other obligations. Mostly, painting! So, I will still do this, because I love it, but not every week! I will do a once a month profile in November and each month thereafter. I do love researching my "subjects"! If you have a suggestion on a favorite artist that I can profile, even if it's you, please let me know!

Leslie Hotel and Palm Fronds Oil Painting

This oil painting shows a partial view of the Leslie Hotel on Ocean Drive in South Beach with the distinct Art Deco architectural eyebrows (above the windows). The palm fronds have thick impasto paint and it's set against a brilliant, sunny day. Ocean Drive is definitely the place to visit if you want to see Art Deco style buildings!

Feautured in a lovely treasury!

Natascha, of Banou, an architect from Switzerland, included my Miami Beach Waiting for You painting in her lovely Etsy treasury this morning. I wondered over to her shop and discovered that she makes beautiful, minimalist jewelry. Just my style!

In Another Lovely Treasury

Yesterday I mentioned how one of my paintings (Varadero Beach) had been featured in a lovely treasury from 3LittleMonkees. Well no sooner had I posted that on the blog, that I received a notification that my Miami Beach Lifeguard 41 Street had been featured as well in another treasury. Wow! Two treasuries in one day...how sweet!

Miami Beach Lifeguard Shack 41 Street

Beach & Straw Hat Vista

I've been thinking about doing this painting for a really long time. Finally, it's done and finished. It's a simple panoramic view of a beach with a straw hat and some palm fronds showing through on one of the panels. I'd like the viewer to see it and immediately RELAX! At least that's the effect it has on me! I love the beach and I wish I had a nearby hammock hanging from a palm tree in our favorite part of Miami Beach (that would be around 41 street and Collins Ave;).

Lightly varnished to protect it from dust and ensure longevity.

Two Treasuries Today

Karen, from Boxerlovinglady at Etsy included my Purple Hyacinth Aceo in her lovely treasury. There are all kinds of vintage artwork in her shop from 1960s, 1970s and 1980s OOAK (one of a kind) art pieces, clothing, shoes, hats, boots and lovely found objects. Check out her shop, when you get a chance. And today, I woke up to find that not only was I included in her lovely aceo collection but in Melissa's Bee Marie's Etsy shop as well! Check her out! She too has some lovely vintage items.

Thank you so much, ladies! Making treasuries on Etsy seems to be an art form in itself that escapes me! It's quite challenging to wait for the opportunity to do it and you have to be ready to pounce and I just do not have that patience!

I was inspired by this scene of a late 1950's red Thunderbird in front of the Avalon Hotel on South Beach. One of my goals was to bring out the Art Deco feel of this modern day scene on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach.

Miami Beach Lifeguard Shack

Another in a series of Miami Beach Lifeguard Shacks. An original, impressionistic oil painting that has gently textured impasto. This unique lifeguard station can be found on 46th Street and Collins Avenue (next to the Eden Roc). As you can see from the green flag, it was a great day to go swimming and besides, no one was around during this time of the day which made it really nice!
