Cafe con Leche and Pastelito de Guayaba

Cafe con Leche and Pastelito de Guava

In my last post, I asked that you stay tuned for the conclusion of my painting study on Cafe con Leche and pastelito de guayaba. Well, I'm sorry to say that the pictures I wanted to take of the progression did not get taken. I'm totally guilty. I just forgot! You see, when I paint, I go off into a "zone" where I forget about time, places, people, etc.
I just totally focus on painting and everything goes out the window!
So, I'm sorry that I forgot that I was SUPPOSED to take the darned photos as I progressed. It was hard enough not eating the delicious pastelito until I was all done! Here is the actual, finished painting.

Pastelito de Guayaba

I've been receiving some valuable input from my Collectors lately. Danielle suggested the art pendant bookmarks, which I think make a lovely gift.  Who wouldn't prefer to use one of these as opposed to a random piece of paper to mark your spot (like I was prone to do-lol?).

And another Collector tells me that I should focus more on my heritage. She says "I think your edge is that you're Cuban and you should paint many different Cuban themes in addition to the generic plants that you love. But not everyone gets the Cuban nostalgia that you do!" Thank you so much, Daisy!

In keeping with her suggestion, I brought home some guava pastelitos and set out to paint one of my favorite Cuban themes. Food. I'm glad I live in an area that has these delicious treats in practically any corner store although I do have to control the urge to eat my subject matter!

Next, I'll post what I did with my pastelitos, and Cuban bread, before eating them of course!

A Cuban cafe con leche (café au lait) with a delicious guava puff pastry has got to be one of my all-time favorite treats. This painting was inspired by one of my Cuban collectors who lives in an all-anglo enclave and pines for this typical Cuban treat!

This Cafe con Leche and Pastelito de Guayaba has gone on to a happy home however, I do have prints from FineArtAmerica here.

Cafe Con Leche at Moffitt Cancer Center

The Moffitt Cancer Center is one of the "finest cancer centers in the world" according to their web site.  Their mission is to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer. Moffitt’s vision,  is "to be the leader in scientific discovery and translation into compassionate care, cures, and prevention of cancer for our community and the world."  I'm glad they exist.

So you can imagine how incredibly pleased honored I was when they contacted me recently regarding my Cafe Con Leche Original Oil painting.  They chose this piece to represent a special event they're having this coming Wednesday.  The title they had chosen for this "charla"  was "Cafe con Leche & Discussion about Lymphedema" and my painting seemed to fit the bill perfectly! Doesn't it fit in nicely?  They will raffle it at the event.
Since the flyer is in Spanish, here is the translation:

Join us for coffee with milk and biscuits, and
hear information in Spanish about lymphedema.

Wednesday, June 9 from 10-11 am
in the meeting room "Ferman Family"

Another in a limited series of Cuban themes. This one is one of my all-time favorite Cuban foods. A fresh-baked guava “pastelito” with lots of guava fruit oozing out of the sides. Guavas have many health benefits including five times the vitamin C of oranges and are also rich in vitamins A and B1. Of course when they’re processed with sugar as a marmalade and then baked inside a puff pastry, I think they might loose some of their nutritional value! In spite of that, a guava pastelito along with a delicious cup of Cuban coffee with milk (latte for those folks who can’t get real, fresh brewed, Bustelo) is wonderful! I can almost smell it!

Lightly varnished to protect it from dust.
