100 Birthday Celebration

Once again, we're planning our annual trip to visit family in Illinois. This year is extra special though. My mom-in-law is actually turning 100 this year!  Here she is when she was just three years old in 1915.  Wasn't she a cutie?

She was born in the small town of Toulon, Illinois and has never in her life lived very far from this location.
Even now, she's a resident of the Toulon Rehab Center since she can no longer fend for herself at home. And when the time comes, she'll be buried at the Toulon cemetery too.

Thankfully, she's quick witted and has a better memory than me. My husband, the baby of her nine children, speaks with her every Sunday and she lets him know whats going on in the town and loves to update him on the local obituaries. It's like she's still here and they're not!

I'm also looking forward to seeing the corn fields, barns and wide open spaces of this lovely part of Illinois!

White House in Santorini

I dream about this place! On my bucket list is spending time in Santorini and taking in the fantastic views of the white washed houses overlooking the Med.

I actually painted this as an entry into Carol Marine's Daily Painting Works Challenge. The One Color per Stroke Challenge required the use of brights (a type of brush) and limited brush strokes.

Happy Memorial Day!

And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free.

~Lee Greenwood~

I've been inspired lately by the royal poincianas in south Florida and at the same time, thinking of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. So many have sacrified for the freedoms we enjoy. We remember them on this day.

Cuban Tinajon Original Impasto Oil

Copyright 2010 Maria Soto Robbins

Another in a series of Cuban nostalgic themes. This one is an impressionistic painting which was done in oils with palette knife and brushes and it shows a traditional Cuban earthen water jar used in the province of Camaguey. It's a historical, Cuban tradition of the region. The little red flowers have a raised, thick, impasto finish. It's almost three dimensional.

Lightly damar varnished to protect it from dust and ensure longevity.

Royal Poinciana in Cuba

Royal Poinciana (Flamboyan) in Cuba

This impressionistic oil painting was done with palette knives on canvas panel. The blooms on the tree have raised impasto flowers, almost three dimensional and the entire painting is lightly textured. The colors are slightly muted and the scene is of a typical "nostalgic" Cuban vintage pochade.

Dimention: 8x10
