Tinajon and Bougainvillea Oil Painting ACEO

Copyright 2010 Maria Soto Robbins

A collector, from New Jersey, recently bought one of my tinajones painting and asked to see more.  He kept telling me that he was from Camaguey in Cuba as if this would somehow justify his desire for another iconic painting of the region.  I fully understand! It's an "añoranza" or yearning for that which we fondly remember and love.  I'm honored that he found something in my creation to satisfy those feelings.

This is another tinajon aceo.  A cute little painting done in oils with palette knife and brushes and it shows a traditional Cuban earthen water jar used in the province of Camaguey. The Spaniards brought these clay jugs to Cuba and it's become a historical, tradition of the region. Actually, it's become a symbol for the city of Camaguey. The little red-pink flowers on the side,  have a raised, thick, impasto finish. It's almost three dimensional!

ACEO stands for Art Card Edition Original, miniature original paintings or prints, a mere 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches in size. They are affordable works of art that can be framed, exhibited on an easel or displayed anywhere you like! ACEO's are a wonderful way to build a collection of art miniatures from a wide range of artists at a fraction of the price of a large-scale original.

Palms and Tinajon

Many of my neighbors in south Florida have these clay pots in their front yards that are used as decorative garden elements. These clay pots or tinajónes were originally found in the province of Camaguey in Cuba where the symbol of the city is the tinajón. It was used to catch the rain water, keeping it fresh, for later use. Local legend has it that if you drink water from a girl's personal tinajón, you will fall in love with the girl and never leave her. As a distinct decorative element, they're very common in our area. My neighbor has one in her front yard and I thought it was a particularly pretty one with the nearby palms. Hers was the inspiration for my painting although I've added a row of bougainvillea along the fence and deleted some other elements for the sake of simplicity. You can see my inspiration photo as well.

“Tinajónes” (Water Jars) & Red Flowers

“Tinajónes” (Water Jars) & Red Flowers

I just finished these two thick impasto paintings of Cuban water jars (what’s she up to now, you might be asking…). Actually, a new friend, Daisy, who is from Camagüey, Cuba, suggested I paint these.

I find these water jars, or tinajónes to be a great subject to paint and the story behind them is very unique and interesting. Even though I’m Cuban, I really didn’t know too much about their history. Apperantly the Andalucians from Spain brought them over to Camagüey to be used for water storage.

According to Cuban Traditions, the tinajón was placed in the gardens of the houses with wide portals, where it can still be observed half of its round form buried under channels that bring the fresh water from the red tiled roofs. The tinajónes and the tile roofs were produced in the handmade shops of the region, denominated tejares. They used mud from the Sierra de Cubitas.

In Miami we still see a lot of houses that show off a tinajón, laid on it’s side, as part of the landscaping. My old neighbor, Marta, told me that whoever had one of these in their yard was from Camagüey. I don’t know whether that’s true or not, but they’re such a neat element in a garden that I’m thinking one would look great in front of my house!
