Summer Absence

Pineapple Impasto Oil
Thanks to Jutta in Carmel, CA.

I've been MIA for some time and I apologize if you've missed my posts.  June was spent in our condo on Miami Beach, relaxing by the beach most days and July brought an onslaught of work for my  "other" job. Throw in a mix of health issues, doctor's visits, etc. and plain laziness when I had some free time, and ergo, you have an ignored blog!

Despite all this, my paintings have managed to be bought and shipped on to loving homes. For that, I'm ever so grateful!

Poinsettia Sgraffito Impasto Oil Painting

Copyright 2010 Maria Soto Robbins

I recently mentioned about how my poinsettias are inspiring me this holiday season.  You can read about it here.  There are several other ideas that I have for painting this lovely flower but a technique I hadn't tried before is sgraffito (not to be confused with graffiti-lol).  I think you can guess that this involves "scratching" or "sgraffitoing" the surface of the painting through various layers of the rich, impasto oil paint. The end of a brush is a common tool but I just used the sharp end of a palette knife. Actually there was very little brushwork on this one, mostly palette knives. It came out very sculptural and three dimensional. It certainly was fun to do and I hope you like it!

El Morro Original Oil Painting

Copyright 2010 Maria Soto Robbins
If you visit Havana, Cuba you will have to see El Morro.  It is an impressive fort that can be viewed from miles around as it dominates the port entrance of Havana. This impressive "fortaleza" is perched on a cliff on the other side of the harbor from Old Havana. You can also see it from the Malecon, where everyone congregates to chat and watch the waves go over the seawall and splash the passing cars. It's been so many years that I hardly remember, but I will never forget.

This impressionistic painting was done in oils with palette knife and brushes and it shows this fort which is one of the most famous and recognizable monuments of Havana, Cuba. My painting focuses on the lighthouse and promontory area and on one of the cannons that’s perched on the adjacent rampart .

Another Lovely Purple Treasury!

Vintage Frocks Of Fancy included me in a lovely treasury. This is the third one this week that I've been featured! I'm so excited & pleased. Thank you!

This Etsy shop is so unique and unlike any other I've seen there. They have a very creative way of describing their very chic vintage dresses, telling a little story about each one. The lovely dresses listed vary from the 1920's through the
1980's. I can just imagine Betty Draper from Mad Men wearing one of these little numbers from the 1960's! Check it out here.

My husband gave me a lovely vase of tulips for Valentine's Day two years back and I've been meaning to paint them ever since! Now when I see tulips, I think of Valentines!

This Original Art ACEO is an original, gently textured, oil painting. They are beautiful when matted and framed to either 5"x7" or 8"x10" size and are perfect for a small wall space, display case, mantle or easel. A grouping of framed ACEO's makes an intriguing area of interest on a wall or shelf.
